You're cute....for a dark skinned girl.

Let me set the scene for you. Out in a lounge. A girl is dancing and a dude comes up behind her. They begin to dance.

Dude: You are so sexy and chocolaty. What's your name?
Girl: Thanks.. Ms. Fashionista (clearly not what was said but you get it). Yours?Dude: Charlie..You are a good dancer can I get your number?
Girl: Thank you. I have a man.
Dude: So what you can't have friends? (Why do guys ask this?.. That is a different blog topic though)
Girl: I have friends.
Dude: Well you're cute for a dark skinned girl. You really aren't going to give me your number?
Girl: No.. that's ok. (At this point the girl is shocked and appalled. The song ends and she walks away)

Now the girl wanted to go off on the dude but you never know the kind of people who you will encounter when you are out. So she calmly walked away.
Sadly this is a true story that happens a lot. Just a day prior to this happening, one of my homegirls called me up to tell me that a guy had dropped that line on her. WTH.

I swear I have heard this comment so many times and my immediate reaction is to jab the guy who is saying this. Especially because he feels like he is complimenting me. I am sorry but saying that I am cute FOR a dark skinned girl doesn't really seem like a compliment. First of all, I am 26. I don't want to be considered cute anyways. Secondly, for a dark skinned girl. Are you implying that dark skinned girls are ugly and that I happened to luck out? That is such a slap in the face. As a society is there still that stigma attached to color of your skin in the black community?

I love my chocolaty complexion. I have never had a problem with being dark and that really has a lot to do with my mother. She always raised me to love everything about myself. Anyways, I was watching an episode of the Tyra Banks show. (Yes again.. I love it) There are a lot of girls out there with complexes when it comes to the color of their skin. They go to the extreme of using skin lighteners and bleach. The reasons they gave for wanting to be lighter were, "Life is easier when you are light", "Growing up the teachers wouldn't help me because of my complexion", and "Men like light skinned women".

Sure in the past there was a line divided and if you had a lighter complexion things could be better for you. Look around though, it is 2008. Why the hell should any of that matter?

I have embraced my skin. My year round tan works for me and I am proud of it. I wish more people felt the same way. So when they hear a comment like that it shouldn't be taken it to heart nor make you question why you have the complexion you have. Just look at the person and know they are not on your level.

Please note if you are reading this and you are thinking of bleaching your skin please see the link below. There are serious health risk associated with this behavior.

Firstly I LOVE the picture. (hee hee hee) Then this guy is apparently an ignorant fool. Just like you said, what is he implying? That all dark skinned women or 'girls' like he said are ugly? And you just got barely lucky enough to be cute. This calls for a Stephanie from Full house 'How Rude!' type of moment. I hope you didn't give him the digits and kept it moving. Ignorance is truly bliss. Then the subject of 'you can't have friends' ugh! I'm sick of men and WOMEN using this line to try to break up a happy home. Keep it moving you worthless jerks and smuts. ugh! Great write!
I'm glad you put the health risks to bleaching your skin, I was really considering doing it. Guess I won't now. (jk)

Being that I too am dark complexion 26 year old female, I totally agree with you. I first want to thank you for vocalizing the importance of loving who you are, the way God made you to be.
As a young girl, I hated myself and most importantly my complexion. Always being the dark one of the bunch, but as time went on and confidence grew, I realized that I was unique and looked different from the rest. what that translates to me is, I STAND OUT.
